The market for printed paper or paperboard labels in Slovakia expanded to 3,891 tons in 2019 but contracted sharply to 2,141 tons in 2020. This decline coincided with a shift in trade dynamics, as exports increased while imports decreased after three years of growth, reducing the net volume available domestically.

From 2021 to 2023, the market recovered strongly, rising to 2,382 tons in 2021, surging to 3,794 tons in 2022, and reaching a peak of 4,518 tons in 2023.

In 2024, the market volume fell to 3,761 tons. This period saw the implementation of Slovakia's new Consumer Protection Act effective July 1, 2024, and the EU's updated CLP Regulation introducing digital labeling requirements. Extended producer responsibility rules for packaging added compliance costs, while consumer preference for sustainable, recyclable paper labels grew and digital printing technology adoption increased, with local companies like ETIS Slovakia and S&K LABEL active in the segment.

In 2020, output was valued at 25 122 thousand US dollars, marking a significant 10.2% decrease from the previous year. In 2020, Slovakia exported 2 800 tonnes of printed paper or paperboard labels, a 24.4% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 37.2%, averaging 11.1% per year. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 13.9%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 28.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia, Austria, and Poland were the main destinations for Slovakia's printed paper or paperboard label exports by volume. Czechia accounted for 36.8% of exports, Austria for 14.8%, and Poland for 12.0%, together making up 63.6% of total export volumes.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 5.6%, with an average annual decline of 1.9%. The peak volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 604 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual increase of 17.6%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Germany, Italy, and Czechia were the core sources of Slovakia's printed paper or paperboard label imports by volume. Germany supplied 33.8% of imports, Italy 12.7%, and Czechia 11.7%, together comprising 58.2% of total import volumes.
