Earlier Report Observations

The African palm oil market volume showed considerable variation from 2018 to 2023, starting at 9 057 thousand tonnes. It fell to 8 673 thousand tonnes in 2019, then rose to a peak of 9 566 thousand tonnes in 2020. Volumes declined over the next two years, reaching 8 365 thousand tonnes in 2022.

A rebound to 9 353 thousand tonnes occurred in 2023, coinciding with increased consumer focus on sustainable palm oil in South Africa. The growing demand for RSPO-certified products prompted changes in industry labeling and marketing, which supported market volume. Price sensitivity and skepticism toward certification among some consumers tempered the pace of this shift.
