Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, African production of palm kernel and babassu oil fractions grew steadily from 348 thousand tons to 436.8 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by policy measures such as the Central Bank of Nigeria's Oil Palm Development Initiative launched in 2019, which aimed to boost domestic output and reduce import reliance. The initiative contributed to a sharp drop in imports that year, temporarily lowering the total market volume, while local production continued to increase.

By 2023, the market volume had recovered to 504.7 thousand tons, aided by substantial industry investments. The National Palm Produce Association of Nigeria and UNIDO secured a €300 million investment, and the BUA Group signed a deal to construct a new 1,000 metric-ton-per-day palm oil refinery and fractionation plant, marking the entry of a major new player and significant capacity expansion. In 2024, the sector showed continued resilience with major companies reporting record profits amid economic challenges, reflecting ongoing investment and modernization efforts.
