Earlier Report Observations

Production of palm-kernel oilcake in Nigeria increased steadily from 154 thousand tons in 2018 to 193 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was initially supported by consistent demand from the soap manufacturing and animal feed industries, alongside ongoing small-scale processing operations. A significant boost came in 2020 when the government endorsed palm kernel meal as an alternative raw material for animal feeds, which directly encouraged feed millers to incorporate more cake into their formulations, thereby raising consumption.

The market expansion accelerated towards 2022, with production peaking above 188 thousand tons. This surge was linked to forecasted increases in palm kernel crushing capacity and the emergence of new demand segments, particularly packaged foods with high palm kernel oil content. Concurrently, private sector investments and Central Bank of Nigeria initiatives aimed at expanding oil palm cultivation and processing technology enhanced overall output capabilities.

Growth moderated slightly in 2023 but remained positive. The launch of the Edo State Oil Palm Program, which allocated approximately 120,000 hectares of land to domestic and foreign investors, provided a structural boost to the sector's long-term capacity. Furthermore, the Central Bank's removal of foreign exchange restrictions for importing palm kernel products in late 2023 introduced new market dynamics, while ongoing technological advancements in processing and waste valorization continued to support production efficiency.
