The paddy rice market in Northern Africa expanded significantly from 3.3 million tons in 2018 to nearly 5.0 million tons in 2019. This surge was driven by the launch of the BRISPI project in Côte d'Ivoire, aimed at improving smallholder rice production, along with millers' engagement in contract farming with small-scale farmers to secure paddy supply.

After a period of stabilization, the market volume dipped to 4.3 million tons in 2021 before recovering strongly to reach 6.3 million tons in 2023. This later growth was supported by favorable climatic conditions across the region and the ongoing implementation of Côte d'Ivoire's National Rice Development Strategy (SNDR II), which focused on expanding irrigated rice fields in northern and central areas.

Northern Africa's paddy rice production increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 4 921 K t of paddy rice, remaining broadly stable compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 2.9%, which translates to an annualized decline of 1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 3 232 K t. That year also saw the largest decline of 36.2%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the most significant increase, with production rising by 52.1%.
