Earlier Report Observations

Production of paddy rice in Kyrgyzstan showed steady growth from 2018 to 2021, supported by state programs and rising domestic demand for high-quality organic rice. Cultivation remained concentrated in the southern regions, where traditional methods ensured stable output, although farmers in the Uzgen area began facing profitability challenges that limited expansion.

The market contracted in 2022 as planting areas for Uzgen rice were reduced by 100 hectares due to persistently low prices and unprofitable costs for growers. This decline coincided with regional trade adjustments, including an EAEU export ban on rice, while continued consumer preference for organic varieties provided underlying market support. Production rebounded in 2023, aided by significant import flows from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, which helped meet domestic needs despite ongoing price increases.

After 2023, import volumes continued their upward trajectory, exceeding 300 tons by 2025, indicating a growing reliance on foreign rice to supplement domestic production in Kyrgyzstan.
