Earlier Report Observations
Rye production in Kyrgyzstan started at 1 109 metric tons in 2018, the year the government launched an export development program for 2019–2022 to support agricultural sectors. Output then declined to 844 t in 2019 and 787 t in 2020. A turnaround began in 2021 as production rose to 876 t, coinciding with broader economic growth where GDP expanded around 3% annually.
The recovery gained momentum in 2022, with output reaching 967 t. This growth was encouraged by rising global food prices, which improved margins for grain producers, and the country’s persistent reliance on grain imports, which incentivized domestic cultivation. Production continued to climb to 1 091 t in 2023, nearly matching the 2018 level, supported by the introduction of anti‑monopoly price controls on staple foods that helped stabilize market conditions.
