The OSB market in the Americas, measured by domestic consumption, showed a volatile trajectory between 2019 and 2023. After starting at 17 675 thousand cubic meters in 2019, the market contracted sharply to 13 850 thousand cubic meters in 2020 and further to 12 073 thousand cubic meters in 2021.

A turnaround began in 2022, with market size rising to 13 153 thousand cubic meters. The most significant shift occurred in 2023, when consumption jumped to 20 608 thousand cubic meters. This surge was primarily due to a dramatic drop in exports, which fell from 8 986 thousand cubic meters in 2022 to only 301 thousand cubic meters in 2023, while production remained relatively stable at around 20 339 thousand cubic meters.

Over the same period, domestic production fluctuated within a range of 20 339 to 22 046 thousand cubic meters, with a peak in 2019 and a gradual decline thereafter. Imports remained a minor component of supply, never exceeding 810 thousand cubic meters annually.

After two years of growth, OSB production in the Americas declined. In 2020, production reached 21 009 K m³, marking a 4.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 2.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 22 046 K m³, while the largest year-over-year increase occurred in 2018 at 3.6%.

Exports OSB from Americas

The market experienced significant fluctuations during this period. OSB exports from the Americas reached 7 969 K m³ in 2020, representing a 69.4% increase year-over-year. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 438 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 66.3%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 974.2% surge. Overall, export levels varied dramatically, with a 18-fold difference between the peak in 2020 and the low in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, China, and South Korea formed the core group of markets for OSB exports in volume terms. Japan accounted for 2.5% of exports, China for 2.3%, and South Korea for 0.9%. Together, these three countries represented 5.7% of total export flows.

In 2020, the value of OSB exports from the Americas totaled 1 816 M $ US, reflecting a 51.0% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 14.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 202 M $ US, which also experienced the largest decline of 32.7%.

During 2017-2020, Japan, China, and Vietnam were the top markets for OSB exports in value terms. Japan contributed 2.5% of export value, China 1.8%, and Vietnam 0.7%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 5.0% of total export flows.

The import market showed high volatility during these years. In 2020, OSB import volume into the Americas amounted to 810 K m³, a 142.4% increase from the previous year. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 22 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 58.1%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 1 398.1% surge. Import levels fluctuated significantly, with a 36-fold difference between the peak in 2020 and the trough in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of OSB imports in volume terms was highly diversified. China led with 22.5% of imports, followed by Romania at 6.0% and Russia at 1.6%. Together, these three countries accounted for 30.1% of total import flows, while the remaining 69.9% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

OSB import value into the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 151 M $ US, down 8.6% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 10.1%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 3.5%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 151 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 26.1%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 22.0%.

The structure of OSB imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 was diversified, with no single country holding a dominant position. China accounted for 7.5% of import value, Romania for 6.8%, and Russia for 1.7%. Together, these three countries represented just 16.0% of total import flows.
