The OSB market in Bulgaria experienced significant volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After declining from 147.2 thousand m³ in 2018 to 122.2 thousand m³ in 2020, the market expanded sharply, reaching 188.2 thousand m³ in 2022, before contracting to 149.6 thousand m³ in 2023. These movements occurred alongside broader construction and real estate sector trends, including rising demand for new building projects and a growing preference for environmentally friendly, sustainable materials.

Domestic production stabilized at 252.2 thousand m³ annually from 2020 onwards, following a temporary dip in 2019. Imports fell substantially over the period, while exports showed considerable variation, reflecting the impact of global supply chain and logistics disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as general inflationary pressures on the construction sector.

In 2020, Bulgaria produced 0.3 million cubic meters of OSB, marking a 9.3% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 16.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 5.1%. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 12.9%, while the largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 6.0%.

OSB exports from Bulgaria increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 142.1 thousand cubic meters, a 19.1% year-on-year rise. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 2.6%, with an annualized decline of 0.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 117.0 thousand cubic meters, which also saw the largest annual decline of 19.8%.

OSB imports into Bulgaria declined for the third consecutive year in 2020, falling to 12.0 thousand cubic meters, a 16.7% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports dropped by 47.5%, with a compound annual decline rate of 19.3%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 49.3%, with a compound annual decline rate of 20.2%. The highest import value was recorded in 2018 at 4 919 thousand US dollars, which also saw a slight increase of 0.9%. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 34.0%.
