Earlier Report Observations

The non-coniferous sawnwood market in the Americas experienced a significant contraction in volume, declining from 30 520 thousand m³ in 2018 to 21 907 thousand m³ in 2023. The most pronounced drop occurred in 2020, when the market size fell by 21% to 24 732 thousand m³, following a period of gradual reduction.

A partial recovery took hold in 2021 and 2022, with market volume increasing to 25 513 thousand m³. This upturn was supported by rising global demand for exports, which encouraged production, alongside a growing consumer preference for certified and sustainably sourced lumber. Persistent supply chain and logistical bottlenecks, however, continued to pose challenges and likely tempered the scale of the rebound. This recovery was short-lived, as the market volume contracted again in 2023, falling to 21 907 thousand m³.

Entering 2024, the market faced new logistical disruptions, including a major Canadian rail shutdown that stranded trade and forced a shift to higher-cost trucking, increasing supply chain expenses. Concurrently, new export opportunities emerged from large-scale construction projects in the Middle East, while domestic consumer demand increasingly favored products with clear country-of-origin and sustainability labeling.
