The orange market volume in Sub-Saharan Africa grew steadily from 2.72 million tons in 2018 to 2.83 million tons in 2020. This expansion was underpinned by young citrus trees reaching full bearing age, which gradually increased production capacities. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 did not disrupt South Africa's resilient export operations, allowing the flow of oranges to continue supporting the domestic market.

In 2021, market volume contracted to 2.68 million tons as a larger share of the harvest was channeled into export markets. The maturation of young trees from earlier plantings enabled producers to significantly boost overseas shipments, which reduced the volume available for local consumption.

Market volume rebounded strongly thereafter, reaching 3.07 million tons in 2022 and 3.23 million tons in 2023. This growth was driven by sustained increases in production. The expansion of BRICS+ trade relations also influenced export strategies and market dynamics, contributing to the overall market structure during this period.

After two consecutive years of decline, orange production in Sub-Saharan Africa rebounded in 2020. The region produced 4 037 thousand metric tons of oranges that year, marking a 3.6% increase from 2019. Production had reached its lowest point in 2019 at 3 895 thousand metric tons, following the largest annual decline of 3.0% in 2018.

Following two years of contraction, the value of orange production in Sub-Saharan Africa showed a significant recovery in 2020. Output was valued at 2 652 million US dollars, representing a strong 16.3% gain compared to 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 281 million US dollars, which also saw the largest annual decline of 10.5%.

Exports oranges from Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 1 243 thousand metric tons of oranges, showing a modest 7.1% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 5.7%, averaging 1.9% annually. The lowest export volume occurred in 2019 at 1 161 thousand metric tons, while the peak was in 2018 at 1 290 thousand metric tons. The most significant decline of 10.0% took place in 2019, whereas the largest increase of 9.7% was recorded in 2018.

Between 2017 and 2020, orange exports from Sub-Saharan Africa were distributed across numerous markets. The Netherlands accounted for 19.3% of export volume, China for 8.0%, and the United Arab Emirates for 6.4%. Together, these three markets represented just 33.7% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

Sub-Saharan Africa's orange exports reached 816.9 million US dollars in 2020, a substantial 20.2% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 6.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 679.7 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2018 at 829.1 million US dollars. The most significant decline of 18.0% occurred in 2019.

Analysis of export values from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. The Netherlands accounted for 17.9% of export value, China for 9.4%, and the United Arab Emirates for 6.7%. Collectively, these three markets represented only 34.0% of total flows, with the remaining 66.0% going to other trading partners.

Imports oranges to Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa imported 40 thousand metric tons of oranges, showing a slight 2.5% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 12.6%, averaging a 4.4% annual decline. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 39 thousand metric tons, while the peak was in 2018 at 47 thousand metric tons. The most significant decline of 17.8% occurred in 2019, whereas the largest increase of 3.6% was recorded in 2018.

Throughout 2017-2020, orange imports to Sub-Saharan Africa were not concentrated among a few key suppliers. Egypt accounted for 13.2% of import volume, Morocco for 2.5%, and Portugal for 2.5%. Together, these three countries represented only 18.2% of total import flows.

Sub-Saharan Africa imported 37.3 million US dollars worth of oranges in 2020, an 11.1% increase from the previous year. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 33.6 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2018 at 39.0 million US dollars. The most significant decline of 13.9% occurred in 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, the partner portfolio for orange imports to Sub-Saharan Africa was quite diverse. Egypt accounted for 21.9% of import value, Portugal for 5.9%, and Spain for 4.3%. Together, these three countries represented only 32.1% of total import flows.
