The watermelon market in Vietnam saw significant growth from 2018 to 2020, with market size rising from 1 040 thousand tons to 1 396 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by favorable export conditions to China, where seasonal harvesting differences allowed Vietnamese watermelons to supply the market during China's off-season, alongside tax exemptions for exported produce.

After peaking in 2020, the market contracted to 1 122 thousand tons in 2021 before recovering to 1 206 thousand tons by 2023. In late 2023, a protocol for formal watermelon exports to China was signed, introducing stricter quarantine requirements but expanding market access. Concurrently, a sharp price drop to 2 000-4 000 VND per kg impacted farmer profitability and influenced production decisions.

Moving into 2024, the market remained influenced by export dynamics to China, with favorable weather and the adoption of advanced cultivation techniques, such as planting area codes, enhancing production quality and export preparedness.

Vietnam was among the world's leading watermelon producers from 2017 to 2020, ranking 12th globally by production volume.

Vietnam's watermelon production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 1 456 thousand tons of watermelons, marking a 6.8% rise from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 29.9%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 9.1%.

Vietnam's watermelon production value also rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 876.0 million US dollars, reflecting a strong gain of 15.9% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 56.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.0%.

Exports watermelons from Vietnam

Watermelon exports from Vietnam declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 60.7 thousand tons, which is 41.5% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 67.4%, equating to an annualized decline of 31.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, China remained the overwhelmingly dominant buyer of watermelons from Vietnam, accounting for 99.2% of total exports in volume.

The market for watermelon imports into Vietnam showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Imports reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2018, with a two-fold gap between these years. In 2020, Vietnam imported 0.9 thousand tons of watermelons, indicating a sharp decrease of 28.5% compared to the previous year. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 1.4 thousand tons, with the largest increase of 103.7% also occurring that year.

In 2020, watermelon deliveries to Vietnam totaled 565 thousand US dollars, down by 22.6% compared to the previous year. The maximum value was 985 thousand US dollars in 2018, which saw the largest increase of 125.8%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 25.9%.
