Earlier Report Observations

The Mexican orange market volume held steady at around 4.72 million tons in 2018 and 2019. This stability occurred within a market structure characterized by production concentrated in the states of Veracruz, Tamaulipas, and San Luis Potosí, and where a long-term increase in average crop yield had supported production growth. The presence of numerous intermediaries in the marketing chain continued to exert downward pressure on prices received by growers during this period.

Market volume contracted to 4.56 million tons by 2021. This decline coincided with the market's inherent preference for fresh fruit consumption, which limited offtake for industrial processing. Simultaneously, unexpected adverse climatic conditions and broader social factors introduced volatility and negatively affected supply, contributing to lower production volumes.

A rebound followed, with the market expanding to 4.91 million tons in 2023. Although drought and pests posed challenges in some Mexican growing regions, a significant reduction in the Florida orange harvest due to hurricanes boosted regional demand for Mexican fruit. Domestic production increased by 2% in 2023, fueled specifically by stronger demand for orange juice, a trend further supported by growing health consciousness and new product development focusing on natural ingredients.
