Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the orange market volume in CIS fluctuated between 505 and 538 thousand tons. A global drought in 2018 raised initial concerns but did not disrupt supplies significantly. In 2020, a reported decline in domestic Russian fruit and vegetable production may have modestly supported demand for imported oranges, yet the overall market volume saw a slight decrease.

Market volume recovered to 526.6 thousand tons in 2021, aided by increased procurement of oranges from South Africa and a diversification of supply sources. The landscape shifted drastically in 2022 when international sanctions and a sharp devaluation of the ruble caused orange prices in Russia to surge by over 70%. This price spike led to a sharp contraction in market volume, which fell to 427.7 thousand tons.

Elevated price levels persisted through 2023, further reducing the physical market volume to 398.9 thousand tons, despite noted demand for oranges from Egypt and Turkey. By 2024, import volumes showed a recovery to 483.1 thousand tons, coinciding with shifts in global supply chains, including increased export activity from Morocco.
