Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, Chile's orange market volume grew from 42.1 K t to 76.9 K t, with notable fluctuations driven by export dynamics. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains, reducing exports and temporarily boosting domestic availability. Subsequently, the opening of the Chinese market for Chilean oranges from 2020 onward enabled a sharp export recovery in 2021, which pulled market volume down.

Orange production rose moderately from 140.0 K t in 2018 to 150.2 K t in 2023, supported by the expansion of citrus planting areas as growers switched from traditional crops. New orchards came into bearing, adding to output. In 2022, a frost affected the citrus sector, but orange production continued to increase. Meanwhile, growing international competition from Peru and South Africa, along with high U.S. prices, influenced export decisions, contributing to the volatility in domestic market volume.

By 2023, the anticipated production increase materialized, and despite strong U.S. demand, exports kept declining, leaving more oranges for the local market. The industry continued efforts to diversify exports and improve traceability attributes for Asian and European consumers.
