Earlier Report Observations

The orange market in Polynesia displayed significant volatility from 2018 to 2023, with volume dropping to 2 363 t in 2020 before surging to 3 363 t in 2021 and then moderating to 3 001 t by 2023. These swings were largely attributable to substantial year‑to‑year changes in import volumes, which ranged from a low of 1 431 t to a high of 2 442 t over the period.

Domestic orange production followed a gradual downward trend, declining from 946 t in 2018 to 905 t in 2023, reinforcing the market’s dependence on imported fruit to maintain overall supply. The market’s lowest point in 2020 coincided with a sharp reduction in imports, while the peak in 2021 was driven by a rebound in shipments from abroad.

In 2024, invasive plants such as miconia and barbadine were reported to be damaging local orange orchards in the Punaruu valley, posing a threat to already‑declining domestic yields. Simultaneously, the planned construction of an agricultural storage hangar on Tahaa aimed to improve local production and post‑harvest infrastructure for citrus and other crops.
