Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian orange market volume fluctuated between 16.8 million tons in 2018 and 17.7 million tons in 2023, with key movements driven by changes in export demand for orange juice. A sharp 18% rise in juice export volumes in 2019 increased processing demand for fresh oranges, supporting market growth. Conversely, declining juice export revenues and volumes in 2020 and 2021 reduced industrial offtake, contributing to a contraction in total market volume.

From 2022 onward, the market recovered despite persistent production challenges. Heavy rains raised fruit drop rates in the São Paulo citrus belt, and citrus greening disease affected over 38% of trees by 2023. Nevertheless, orange juice exports expanded by 9% in the 2022/23 season, driven by strong demand from the United States. A favorable exchange rate and high global juice prices further incentivized production and exports, allowing market volume to grow even under supply constraints.

Underlying these shifts were structural trends: major processors such as Cutrale, Gibran and BeFruit invested in technology and certification to access premium markets, while global health-conscious consumption boosted demand for orange-based beverages. Disease pressure and climate variability, however, kept production costs elevated and stocks low, sustaining upward price pressure on both fresh and processed oranges.
