Orange production in Benin showed consistent growth from 2018 to 2020, rising from 15 122 tonnes to 15 571 tonnes. This expansion was supported by improved agricultural planning frameworks, initiated by the National Agricultural Census decreed in 2018, which aimed to better map farmers and cultivated areas for the orange sector.

The market landscape transformed with the entry of the large-scale Orana Farms project in 2022, involving approximately 100 000 hectares of citrus plantations backed by the state and Brazilian partners. This new player helped maintain production growth despite reported challenges in key growing zones related to water access and inputs. By 2023, Orana Farms' operational orange processing plant in Za-Kpota began producing concentrate for export, which drove a sharp rise in exports to 2 969 tonnes and consequently reduced the domestic market volume to 12 519 tonnes, even as local production edged up.

Government support mechanisms, such as financial aid from the National Agricultural Development Fund (FNDA) for dry-season irrigation, helped sustain profitable orange cultivation. Continued investment in commercial infrastructure, like the Agri-food Pole of Grand Nokoué, facilitated the marketing and distribution of produce, integrating the sector into broader value chains.
