Earlier Report Observations
The orange market in South Africa expanded from 7.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 8.6 thousand tons in 2020, supported by a production base heavily geared for export. Key varieties like Valencia and Navel, destined for the EU, Middle East, and Southeast Asia, underpinned this period of growth, with South Africa accounting for 14.5% of global orange export volume in 2018.
After a dip to 7.8 thousand tons in 2021, the market recovered to 8.5 thousand tons by 2023. This recovery was partly driven by unfavorable weather conditions, including frosts and floods, and stringent new EU phytosanitary regulations for the false codling moth, which constrained export volumes and increased domestic availability. Simultaneously, attractive local prices encouraged producers to direct more fruit toward domestic juice processing, boosting internal consumption.
Entering 2024, adverse weather continued to affect crop forecasts and logistics, while the EU's cold treatment regulations further challenged market access. These headwinds were partially offset by sustained tariff-free access to the US market under AGOA and the gradual maturation of young orchards, which helped maintain production volumes.
