Earlier Report Observations

Mexican fresh olive production expanded from 15 107 tons in 2018 to 32 323 tons by 2021. This strong growth was supported by export demand for green Spanish-style olives in the North American market and the introduction of new oil varieties like Arbequina and Frantoio in states such as Sonora and Tamaulipas. Rising domestic consumer preference for fresh and healthy foods also contributed to higher demand during these years.

Output declined to 21 520 tons in 2022, likely affected by climatic challenges such as drought and alternate bearing that reduce olive yields, before partially recovering to 23 653 tons in 2023. The period also saw the implementation of Mexico's front‑of‑package labeling standard NOM‑051, which required warning seals on foods high in sodium, sugars or saturated fats, influencing product formulation and consumer awareness for processed olive products.

By 2024, production was estimated around 29 592 tons, with key growing states including Baja California, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo and Zacatecas. Drought and labor shortages continued to affect harvest timing and fruit quality. Looking forward, new Spanish food‑quality regulations scheduled for March 2026 will require more detailed labeling for stuffed olives, which may affect Mexican exports that must meet these transparency standards.
