From 2018 to 2021, the domestic market volume for oil seeds and oleaginous fruits in Ukraine grew consistently, reaching 15.1 тыс. т. This expansion was initially supported by the commissioning of new processing plants, which increased production capacity. The cancellation of VAT refunds for exporters effective January 2020 then reduced overseas sales, leaving more supply for the local market. Furthermore, the global pandemic in 2020 accelerated the development of biofuels, raising demand for oilseeds as a feedstock. In 2021, import bans on Ukrainian sunflower seeds by trading partners and port blockades that disrupted export logistics further constrained shipments abroad, boosting domestic availability.

The market volume dropped sharply to 10.7 тыс. т in 2022, a 29% decline, as exports doubled—sunflower seed exports alone jumped from 0.08 млн т to 2.8 млн т—driven by strengthened trade ties with the European Union. Wartime logistics disruptions under martial law reoriented sales channels and prioritized export flows. By 2023, the market stabilized around 10.6 тыс. т, with export volumes remaining elevated but more balanced, and the market value recovered to $24.4 млн, influenced by ongoing international price volatility linked to energy costs.

Ukraine's production of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits has grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 20.2 thousand tons, marking a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 23.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 7.4%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 36 394 thousand US dollars, showing a moderate rise of 6.8% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value grew by 41.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.3%.

Ukraine's exports of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits have declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 9 820 tons, representing a significant contraction of 17.8% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 28%, with an average annual decline of 10.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the largest buyers of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits from Ukraine were Austria, accounting for 21.3% of exports in kind, Egypt with 19.6%, and Turkey at 15.4%. Together, these three countries made up 56.4% of Ukraine's total exports in kind during this period.

Ukraine's export value of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits has fallen for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 17 698 thousand US dollars, down 15.4% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export value decreased by 17.6%, with an average annual decline of 6.3%. The peak was in 2018 at 23 106 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 7.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Austria remained the top buyer of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits from Ukraine in value terms, accounting for 29.2% of exports, followed by Turkey at 14.8% and Egypt at 14.0%. Combined, these three countries represented 58.0% of Ukraine's total export value during this period.

After two years of growth, Ukraine's imports of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits declined. In 2020, imports reached 3 005 tons, a decrease of 15.2% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 4.3%, with an average annual decline of 1.4%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 3 545 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 10.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the main sources of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits imports to Ukraine were Hungary, contributing 25.6% of imports in kind, Czechia with 21.9%, and Poland at 14.3%. Together, these three countries accounted for 61.7% of Ukraine's total imports in kind during this time.

In 2019, imports peaked at 9 023 thousand US dollars, while the lowest point was in 2017, resulting in a 1.9-fold fluctuation over the period. In 2020, imports amounted to 7 038 thousand US dollars, a 22.0% drop from the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 88.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary was the leading source of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits imports to Ukraine in value terms, making up 26.0% of imports, followed by Czechia at 22.3% and Poland at 12.3%.
