Imports of foreign oil seeds and oleaginous fruits into Eastern Africa have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 470 tons, representing a sharp drop of 48.4% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 21.4%, with a CAGR of -7.7%. The peak was in 2018 at 923 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 54.3%.

During 2017-2020, the import structure for oil seeds and oleaginous fruits in kind was relatively balanced rather than concentrated. From 2017 to 2020, Turkey, the United States, and South Africa were among the largest suppliers of oil seeds and oleaginous fruits to Eastern Africa in value terms, with shares of 12.9%, 11.5%, and 9.9%, respectively.
