The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Eastern Africa expanded from 1 967 thousand tons in 2018 to 2 312 thousand tons in 2022, with a particularly strong increase of 215 thousand tons in 2021. This period of growth established a larger domestic supply base across the region.

In 2023, the market volume contracted to 2 127 thousand tons. This decline was influenced by price instability in Uganda, where high production costs for large-scale farmers, seasonal fluctuations, and pest challenges reduced yields and affected supply. Concurrently, groundnut traders reported escalating prices, which likely tempered consumer demand and constrained market activity.

Regional developments included Tanzania's implementation of proactive agricultural policies and a significant budget increase to support agro-processing factories and investment. In Uganda and Kenya, efforts focused on developing new improved groundnut varieties with pest resistance and promoting value addition among farmers, while global consumer trends showed rising demand for natural, minimally processed nut products.

Eastern Africa's production of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 2 094 thousand tonnes, marking a 3.4% increase from the previous year. Production reached its lowest point in 2018 at 1 985 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.6%.

Exports of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts from Eastern Africa have grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 70 164 tonnes, representing a significant 34.2% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 54%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 15.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Vietnam, Indonesia, and South Africa remained the primary buyers of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts from Eastern Africa. Vietnam accounted for 46.1% of exports in volume, Indonesia for 5.7%, and South Africa for 4.7%. Together, these three countries represented 56.5% of total exports.

The value of Eastern Africa's exports of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 67 408 thousand US dollars, showing a 2.3% rise from the year before. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 117.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 29.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the export value of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts from Eastern Africa was not highly concentrated. Vietnam accounted for 17.2% of the value, South Africa for 7.7%, and Indonesia for 5.6%. Combined, these three countries made up only 30.5% of total export flows.

Imports of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts into Eastern Africa have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region imported 35 290 tonnes, which is 15.7% higher than the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 70.8%, with an annualized growth rate of 19.5%.

During 2017–2020, the main sources for imports of unroasted and uncooked groundnuts into Eastern Africa were South Africa, India, and China. South Africa contributed 4.8% of imports in volume, India 2.6%, and China 0.7%. Together, these countries accounted for 8.1% of total import flows.
