Earlier Report Observations

The Chilean oats market experienced significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. After a sharp contraction in 2019, the market volume rebounded strongly to 593 thousand tons in 2020. This recovery was primarily driven by a substantial increase in imports, as Chile sourced nearly 200 thousand metric tons of oats from Canada to supplement domestic supply.

Market volume remained elevated in 2021 before declining in 2022. The drop was largely due to a major shift toward exports, which surged to over 69 thousand tons, coupled with a near-complete halt in imports. This change was facilitated by the normalization of international logistics and the implementation of the Commercial Transactions Regulation for Oats, which streamlined trade procedures. Concurrently, the national oat planted area reported a significant decrease.

In 2023, a steep fall in domestic production pulled the total market size down to 429 thousand tons. During this period, innovation continued with major players like Bob's Red Mill launching new protein-enriched oat products, catering to health-conscious consumers and reflecting ongoing trends in sustainable packaging and product development.
