Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian oat market expanded from 2018, driven by global consumer shifts toward healthy and convenient foods. This trend was reinforced by local agricultural improvements, including the development of more productive cultivars by Embrapa, which helped increase planted area and yields. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further accelerated demand for healthy staples, pushing production above 1 million tonnes for the first time.

Strong demand from the animal feed sector, as oats became a competitive alternative to corn and wheat, sustained production growth through 2022, reaching nearly 1.3 million tonnes. Investments in agricultural technology and an 11% expansion of planted area in Paraná supported this rise. However, output contracted in 2023, bringing market volume back to around 889 thousand tonnes.

The market diversified with the entry of new players like foodtech startup Nude, which launched oat-based beverages during the pandemic, and continued investments from major companies such as Nestlé in organic and traceable supply chains. These developments supported value addition and catered to growing consumer interest in plant-based and sustainable options throughout the period.
