The entry of new players in organic segments in 2019 added diversification. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains in 2020, reducing market volume to 37 349 tonnes despite increased local demand for natural spices for medicinal purposes.

From 2021 onward, the market recovered robustly, reaching 58 234 tonnes in 2023. Rising export prices and a strong industry focus on sustainability and quality certifications facilitated access to international markets. State-owned companies actively assisted producers in improving quality, while consumer preference for certified-origin products boosted domestic consumption. Continued trends toward organic and certified offerings supported growth through 2022 and 2023.

India's production of nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, output totaled 37 000 tonnes, down 2.6% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production dropped by 14%, with an average annual decline of 4.9%. The sharpest decrease occurred in 2019, at 11.6%, while 2018 saw no change, with a 0.0% increase.

India's production value for nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, it reached 556.8 million US dollars, a significant 15.3% jump from 2019. Exports nutmeg, mace and cardamoms from India

Following a two-year decline, India's exports of nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms rebounded in 2020, reaching 9 895 tonnes—a 56.8% surge from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 span, exports fell by 11.9%, or 4.1% annually. The lowest volume was in 2019 at 6 312 tonnes, when exports dropped by 32.4%, the steepest decline in the period.

From 2017 to 2020, India's exports of nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms were distributed across numerous countries. The top three—the United Arab Emirates (25.0% of export volume), Saudi Arabia (13.5%), and Vietnam (8.2%)—combined for just 46.7% of total shipments.

Over 2017-2020, imports rose by 19.8%, averaging 6.2% annually. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 8 057 tonnes, when imports fell by 5.7%. The biggest increase came in 2019, at 26.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Nepal, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka were the top sources, collectively making up 83.2% of India's total import volume for nutmeg, mace, and cardamoms.
