Earlier Report Observations

India's coffee market volume remained steady at around 169 thousand tons annually from 2018 to 2020, supported by a growing coffee culture driven by rising disposable incomes and urbanization. The Coffee Board of India actively promoted domestic consumption, while the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shifted consumption patterns towards at-home brewing and premium coffee experiences, contributing to a rise in market value to $311 million despite a slight volume dip.

A significant drop in market volume to 150.6 thousand tons occurred in 2021, primarily explained by a strong increase in exports fueled by government export support policies and high international demand for Indian coffee. The market rebounded sharply from 2022 onwards, with volume reaching 218.8 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was driven by the expansion of direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales, the entry of new players and product segments, and evolving consumer preferences towards more sophisticated, healthy, and premium coffee offerings, which also pushed the market's value to $599 million in 2023.
