Earlier Report Observations

The primary driver behind the contraction of Sudan's not roasted groundnuts market from 2018 to 2021 was a government ban on raw groundnut exports. Aimed at shifting the industry toward more profitable derived products, this policy led farmers to replace groundnut crops with alternatives like okra, cotton, or corn. Consequently, production fell from 2 884 thousand tons in 2018 to 2 355 thousand tons in 2021, while market volume dropped from 2 851 thousand tons to 1 927 thousand tons over the same period, even as export shipments increased.

After a partial recovery to 2 241 thousand tons in 2022, market volume collapsed to 1 032 thousand tons in 2023. That year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade introduced new instructions permitting groundnut exports under Sudanese specifications, set indicative prices, and banned speculative hoarding. These measures helped resume exports after an eight-month suspension, but overall production plummeted, reflecting persistent economic hardships and likely climatic pressures.
