The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Peru showed modest growth in 2019, reaching 16 430 t, before contracting sharply to 12 425 t in 2020. This decline was driven by changes in consumption habits during the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected food security and nutritional intake in Peruvian households, reducing demand for products like groundnuts.

Market volume rebounded strongly to 15 751 t in 2021 and continued growing to 18 290 t in 2022. The post-pandemic economic recovery, with GDP growth near 3.5%, supported demand in the food sector. Simultaneously, the implementation of front-of-package warning label regulations encouraged manufacturers to offer healthier products, increasing the appeal of groundnuts as a snack low in saturated fats and sugar.

In 2023, the market volume decreased to 16 092 t. This contraction occurred despite sustained consumer interest in healthy products, as rising basic costs for the household consumption basket in Metropolitan Lima, which increased by 40.5% over the decade, exerted inflationary pressure on prices and constrained volume consumption.

Peru's production of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 4 672 tonnes, marking a significant drop of 13.2% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 19%, with an average annual decline of 6.8%.

The value of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts production in Peru has decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 3 225 thousand US dollars, down 6.7% year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value declined by 9.5%, with an average annual decrease of 3.3%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 3 800 thousand US dollars, while the largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 9.1% drop. In contrast, 2018 saw the biggest increase at 6.6%.

Peru's exports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts have grown for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export volumes reached 5 270 tonnes, representing a substantial increase of 55.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 211.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 46.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ecuador accounted for nearly all of Peru's exports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in volume terms, with a share of 98.3% of total flows.

In 2020, exports were recorded at 3 638 thousand US dollars, which is 67.0% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value increased by 248.5%, equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 51.6%.

The peak volume was recorded in 2019 at 14 442 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 12.1% rise.
