Earlier Report Observations

The Peruvian sugar cane market volume expanded from 11 715 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 13 468 thousand tonnes in 2019. This growth was driven by fresh capital inflows and the conversion of sugar mills into joint-stock companies following a 1996 decree, which revitalized the industry. Additionally, recovery from severe floods in 2018 and rising demand for anhydrous ethanol for gasoline blending created a new productive outlet for cane.

After peaking in 2019, the market volume entered a gradual downward trend, reaching 11 919 thousand tonnes by 2023. The decline was exacerbated in 2023 by the negative impact of the Coastal El Niño and Global El Niño phenomena, which reduced sucrose levels and crop productivity. Significant private investments continued to modernize the sector, but climatic challenges contributed to the overall contraction in volume over the period.
