Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, the African market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts experienced shifts in volume linked to production factors. The introduction of over 100 improved groundnut varieties supported production levels initially. However, continued challenges in yield improvement contributed to a market contraction in 2019. A recovery followed in 2020, driven by increased demand as global production of groundnut oil was insufficient to cover consumption, elevating the role of African producers.

The market's value demonstrated sustained growth from 2021 onward, even as physical volumes fluctuated. A significant rise in refined groundnut oil export prices across Africa increased the processed value of the crop in 2021. The following year, the emergence of roasted peanuts as a major segment, fueled by health and nutrition awareness, expanded overall consumption. In 2023, government price floor policies in Senegal aimed at supporting producers, coupled with rising industrial demand and investments in Nigeria, helped maintain high market value despite a slight dip in volume.

Entering 2024, regulatory measures such as Senegal's temporary suspension of groundnut exports were implemented to secure domestic supply for processing. The broader regional trend continues to be shaped by strong industrial demand, government price interventions, and a consumer shift towards value-added products like refined oil and healthy snacks.
