Earlier Report Observations

Non-coniferous wood fuel production in SADC showed steady growth from 2018 to 2023, rising from 203.3 million m³ to 212.8 million m³. This increase was underpinned by persistent household demand, particularly in rural areas where wood fuel remains a primary energy source due to high electricity costs and limited access to alternatives. Socio-economic factors such as poverty, household size, and education levels continued to shape consumption patterns, ensuring a stable market for producers.

From 2019 onwards, the market saw the emergence of more efficient products like compressed firewood and briquettes, which reduce environmental impact and improve fuel efficiency. This created a new segment within the wood fuel market, stimulating production. Additionally, global hardwood fiber prices began rising in 2020 and reached decade-high levels by 2023, making wood fuel production more attractive from available biomass, especially amid growing circular economy approaches in the forestry sector.

State-owned companies and large-scale forestry plantations provided consistent raw material supply, supporting production volumes. While no major legislative changes or large facility launches were reported, these stable market conditions and product innovations allowed the market to expand gradually over the period.
