Northern Europe's production of non-coniferous wood fuel increased after two years of decline. In 2019, production reached its lowest point at 15,630 thousand cubic meters. The following year, in 2020, output rose to 15,994 thousand cubic meters, marking a modest 2.3% increase from 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, when production fell by 1.8%.

Exports of non-coniferous wood fuel from Northern Europe grew after two years of contraction. In 2019, exports hit their minimum at 949 thousand cubic meters, declining by 3.9% that year. By 2020, exports had rebounded to 1,015 thousand cubic meters, representing a 7.0% increase compared to 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Northern Europe's exports of non-coniferous wood fuel were highly diversified in terms of country structure. The top three destinations—Germany with 8.3% of exports, Norway with 4.5%, and the United States with 3.0%—collectively accounted for just 15.8% of total export volumes. The remaining 84.2% was distributed among a wide range of smaller markets.

After two years of growth, the value of non-coniferous wood fuel exports from Northern Europe declined. In 2019, exports peaked at 144.6 million US dollars, with the largest annual increase of 42.7% recorded in 2018. By 2020, the value had decreased slightly to 142.9 million US dollars, down 1.2% from 2019. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, export value rose by 53.9%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 15.4%.

Imports of non-coniferous wood fuel into Northern Europe showed strong growth. In 2019, imports experienced their largest decline of 2.6%. The following year, in 2020, imports surged to 2,343 thousand cubic meters, a robust 22.4% increase from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports grew by 96.5%, with the largest annual increase of 64.9% occurring in 2018. This equates to an annualized growth rate of 25.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, no single country dominated Northern Europe's imports of non-coniferous wood fuel. The top three suppliers—Russia with 30.8% of import volume, Belarus with 9.1%, and Brazil with 7.9%—collectively accounted for 47.7% of total imports. The rest was spread across numerous smaller partners, each holding modest individual shares.

In 2020, imports totaled 142.9 million US dollars, reflecting a strong year-on-year rise of 11.5%. Over the 2017–2020 period, import value grew by 109%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 27.8%.

During 2017–2020, Russia, Brazil, and the Netherlands were among the largest suppliers of non-coniferous wood fuel to Northern Europe in value terms, with shares of 25.1%, 7.2%, and 5.0%, respectively.
