Production of coniferous wood fuel in SADC rose from 191 thousand m³ in 2018 to 835 thousand m³ in 2021, more than quadrupling in three years. This rapid expansion was driven by consecutive increases in the carbon tax, which made coal more expensive and improved the price attractiveness of biomass. Additionally, global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID‑19 pandemic and the Russia‑Ukraine conflict raised the cost of imported wood fuel, stimulating domestic production.

Growth slowed in 2022, reaching 885 thousand m³, and stabilized in 2023 at the same level. While no new large‑scale pellet plants were commissioned, the Wood for the Trees conference in 2022 highlighted new private‑sector investments, and a draft amendment to the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) to include biomass projects created a clear policy pathway for coniferous wood‑fuel power generation.

SADC's coniferous wood fuel production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2019, production stood at a lower level, but by 2020 it reached 469.8 thousand cubic meters, marking a substantial 128.5% increase from the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 146.4%, translating to an impressive compound annual growth rate of 35.1%.
