Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, the European market for non-coniferous wood fuel was shaped by a growing societal shift towards renewable energy and environmental awareness, which sustained interest in wood fuel as an alternative to fossil fuels. The emergence of wood pellets as a distinct and growing product segment added further momentum. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 notably increased demand for firewood across the continent, as consumers sought economical and locally available renewable heating sources during the crisis.

A major expansion occurred from 2021, driven by the broader European energy crisis and soaring prices for natural gas and other fossil fuels. This significantly boosted demand for both firewood and wood pellets as cost-saving heating alternatives, propelling market size to 116.1 million m³ in 2022. The market for wood-burning stoves also grew during this period, further stimulated by high energy prices.

The market reached a plateau in 2023, with production stabilizing and market size slightly contracting to 115.1 million m³. High prices for wood fuel and pellets persisted, partly due to the ongoing energy crisis, which also led some countries to implement export restrictions and price caps. Environmental concerns over fine particle emissions from wood burning prompted regulatory reviews, while new investments like the X Firewood Factory in Finland aimed to innovate production. Market dynamics in 2024 were further influenced by policy measures such as Spain's VAT reduction on wood fuel to 10% to tackle the energy crisis, alongside increasingly stringent EU-wide environmental regulations on biomass fuel quality and emissions.
