Non coniferous sawnwood market in Serbia

The Serbian non-coniferous sawnwood market contracted from 2018 to 2021, with its volume falling from 240.2 thousand m³ to 187.2 thousand m³. In the initial years, the state-owned forestry company 'Srbijašume' marked increasing volumes of timber for cutting, supporting raw material availability. However, widespread underutilization of industry capacity and the frequent failure of newly established small enterprises introduced instability, contributing to the declining production trend over this period.

Market conditions improved from 2022, with volume growing to 203.6 thousand m³ by 2023. This recovery was propelled by initiatives from the wood and furniture association within the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, which organized international trade missions and fairs to boost exports. The ongoing adoption of FSC sustainable forestry standards and a consumer shift towards eco-friendly products further stimulated the industry. While the COVID-19 pandemic caused global supply chain disruptions, their effect in Serbia was cushioned by domestic production capacity and state support measures, aiding the market's resilience and subsequent growth.

Non-coniferous sawnwood production in Serbia declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 392.0 K m³, but then fell by 8.7% year-over-year to 358.0 K m³ in 2020. The largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 3.5%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 3.8%, averaging an annual decline of 1.3%.

Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood production value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 154.1 M $ US, down 5.4% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 201.9 M $ US, which saw a 19.3% increase. However, in 2019, the value dropped sharply by 19.3%. From 2017 to 2020, production value fell by 8.9%, with an average annual decrease of 3.1%.

After two years of growth, Serbia's exports of non-coniferous sawnwood declined. In 2019, exports peaked at 201.8 K m³, with a significant 20.4% increase that year. However, in 2020, exports fell to 173.6 K m³, marking a 14.0% decrease from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 10.1%, averaging an annual growth rate of 3.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood exports in volume terms were China, Italy, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. China accounted for 22.5% of exports, Italy for 18.5%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina for 12.4%. Together, these three countries represented 53.4% of total export flows.

Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood export value declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 74 723 K $ US, down 10.9% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 87 862 K $ US, which saw a 22.5% increase that year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, export value increased by 4.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood exports in value terms were distributed across many countries. The top three destinations were China with 20.7% of exports, Italy with 15.8%, and Bosnia and Herzegovina with 12.2%. Combined, these countries accounted for 48.7% of total export flows.

After two years of increase, Serbia's imports of non-coniferous sawnwood declined. In 2019, imports reached their highest point at 39.8 K m³, with a 41.3% increase that year. However, in 2020, imports fell to 30.7 K m³, down 22.7% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 28.6%, averaging an annual growth rate of 8.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the leading sources for Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood imports in volume terms were Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ukraine. Croatia accounted for 44.3% of imports, Bosnia and Herzegovina for 33.2%, and Ukraine for 3.9%. Together, these three countries made up 81.5% of total import flows.

Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood import value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 12 849 K $ US, down 27.4% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 18 833 K $ US, which saw a 23.6% increase that year. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, import value decreased by 15.7%, with an average annual decline of 5.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main sources for Serbia's non-coniferous sawnwood imports in value terms were Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Ukraine. Bosnia and Herzegovina accounted for 40.0% of imports, Croatia for 31.2%, and Ukraine for 5.4%. Combined, these three countries represented 76.6% of total import flows.
