From 2018 to 2020, Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood market volume remained stable, rising slightly from 2 688 thousand m³ to 2 717 thousand m³. This period was supported by an active export base of over 500 woodworking companies and the importance of raw material availability for sawmill productivity, which helped sustain production. Efficient marketing channels for small-scale sawmills and changing consumer preferences also played a role in maintaining demand.

Market volume then contracted, falling to 2 672 thousand m³ in 2021 and dropping sharply to 2 355 thousand m³ in 2022, before reaching 2 220 thousand m³ in 2023. This decline coincided with increases in export reference prices for sawnwood, which affected export cost calculations and may have influenced production volumes. The wood processing industry simultaneously saw a recovery in particle and chip production, which could have diverted some industry focus or resources.

Further adjustments occurred in August 2024 when the government again raised export reference prices for sawnwood, indicating ongoing policy measures influencing the trade environment for Indonesian wood products.

Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood production rose for two consecutive years before declining in 2021. That year, output reached 2 622 K m³, marking a 3.5% decrease from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 2.7%, with an average annual decline of 0.9%. The peak was in 2020 at 2 717 K m³, which saw the largest increase of 0.7% during this timeframe.

Following two years of growth, Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood production value dipped in 2021. The output was valued at 1 488 M US dollars, showing minimal change from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production value grew by 8.4%, averaging 2.7% per year. The highest value was recorded in 2020 at 1 495 M US dollars, while the most significant increase occurred in 2019 at 8.5%.

In 2021, Indonesia exported 79.3 K m³ of non-coniferous sawnwood, representing a sharp decline of 24.6% compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports dropped by 36.9%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 14.2%. The largest increase was in 2020 at 6.8%.

From 2018 to 2021, China, Japan, and Malaysia were the primary destinations for Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood exports by volume. China accounted for 68.1% of exports, Japan for 11.0%, and Malaysia for 5.1%, together making up 84.1% of total export flows.

Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood export value in 2021 was 45.0 M US dollars, down 22.3% from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value decreased by 29.7%, with an average annual decline of 11.1%. The largest increase was recorded in 2020 at 6.4%.

Between 2018 and 2021, China, Japan, and the Netherlands were the leading buyers of non-coniferous sawnwood from Indonesia by value. China represented 52.8% of export value, Japan 20.9%, and the Netherlands 4.0%, collectively accounting for 77.7% of total export value.

After two years of decline, Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood import volume rebounded in 2021. Imports reached approximately 129.9 K m³, up 23.3% from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, imports increased by 9.6%, averaging 3.1% per year. The lowest volume was in 2020 at 105.3 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 10.0% during this period.

From 2018 to 2021, the United States, Germany, and Uruguay were the key sources for Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood imports by volume. The United States contributed 29.6% of imports, Germany 12.3%, and Uruguay 8.5%, together representing 50.4% of total import flows.

Following a two-year downturn, Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood import value surged in 2021. Imports totaled 103.7 M US dollars, a steep increase of 48.7% from the year before. Over the 2018-2021 period, import value rose by 22.7%, with an average annual growth of 7.1%. The lowest value was in 2020 at 69.8 M US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 14.5%.

The country composition of Indonesia's non-coniferous sawnwood import value from 2018 to 2021 was diverse. The United States accounted for 30.7% of import value, China for 9.5%, and Germany for 8.8%, together forming just 49.0% of total flows. The remaining 51.0% was distributed among a wide range of other countries.
