Earlier Report Observations

The Indonesian rough wood market maintained stable production volumes from 2018 to 2020, starting with the implementation of Forestry Ministry Regulation No. 106/2018, which clarified protected species and roundwood management based on approved annual plans, ensuring raw material supply. The SVLK legality verification system further bolstered market confidence by guaranteeing sustainable and legal timber. Although economic factors caused a minor dip in 2019, the trend reversed, and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 did not significantly hamper productivity, allowing output to reach 81 429 thousand tonnes.

A record 44% surge in plywood export revenue in 2021 boosted demand for roundwood, yet production eased slightly that year amid tightening global sustainability regulations. By 2022, the postponed EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and enhanced SVLK rules under SK 9895/MenLHK 2022 created regulatory uncertainty, coinciding with weaker plywood export volumes that contributed to a production decline to 80 270 thousand tonnes. The market rebounded in 2023 to 81 474 thousand tonnes as exporters adapted to international standards and expanded output of processed wood products.
