Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for non-coniferous sawnwood in Poland contracted from 701 thousand m³ to 520 thousand m³. This decline was initially driven by a reduction in timber harvesting from state forests, which constrained the supply of raw material for domestic production. The trend was further compounded by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which weakened overall demand and increased production costs for the wood processing industry.

A temporary recovery occurred in 2021, with the market volume rising sharply to 673 thousand m³, primarily fueled by a significant increase in imports. However, this growth was short-lived. Starting in 2022, the market volume began to fall again due to rising timber prices and administrative changes in wood sales rules, which increased costs and created uncertainty for producers. By 2023, these pressures culminated in a steep decline to 299 thousand m³, as continued high costs and weak demand led to reduced production and deteriorating financial results for sawmill and wood processing firms.

In 2024, the market faced new structural constraints with the introduction of a moratorium on logging in state forests, which severely limited the domestic supply of raw timber. Furthermore, the impending EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) set to take effect later in the year introduced new due diligence requirements for the origin of wood, affecting supply chains and market access.
