The market for non-coniferous roundwood in Western Europe displayed considerable volatility between 2018 and 2023. Consumption opened the period at 55.5 million m³ in 2018, then edged down to 54.9 million m³ in 2019. A more pronounced contraction followed in 2020, with the market volume dropping to 51.2 million m³. This low point was followed by a robust recovery to 54.9 million m³ in 2021 and a further rise to 56.8 million m³ in 2022. However, the market shrank again in 2023, falling back to 54.4 million m³.

These swings in market volume were closely tied to changes in domestic production. Output fell from 57.9 million m³ in 2018 to 52.6 million m³ in 2020, mirroring the market's decline. The subsequent production rebound to 57.8 million m³ in 2021 and 58.4 million m³ in 2022 fueled the market's recovery. The net trade balance, consistently negative due to higher exports than imports, also modulated annual supply, with export volumes varying significantly from year to year.

Non-coniferous roundwood production in Western Europe declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, production reached 52 577 K m³, marking a 5.7% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 9%, with an average annual decline of 3.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 57 932 K m³, which also saw the largest increase of 0.3%.

After two years of decline, Western Europe's non-coniferous roundwood exports increased in 2020. Exports totaled 3 566 K m³, representing a 2.6% rise from 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 33%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 12.5%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 474 K m³, which also experienced the largest decline of 31.1%.

The export structure for non-coniferous roundwood from Western Europe remained fragmented between 2017 and 2020. China accounted for 24.3% of exports, India for 13.7%, and Italy for 9.4%. Together, these three countries represented 47.4% of total export flows, with no single country holding a dominant share.

Non-coniferous roundwood exports from Western Europe declined in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports were valued at 606.0 million US dollars, showing a modest decrease of 4.9% from the previous year. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 695.7 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 16.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with an 8.4% drop.

Between 2017 and 2020, China was the leading destination for Western Europe's non-coniferous roundwood exports in value terms, accounting for 35.3% of total exports. Vietnam followed with 10.2%, and Italy with 8.7%. Together, these three countries represented 54.2% of total export flows.

After two years of growth, non-coniferous roundwood imports to Western Europe declined in 2020. Imports stood at 2 217 K m³, reflecting a significant decrease of 17.6% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 10.8%, with an average annual decline of 3.7%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 690 K m³, while the largest increase of 7.9% occurred in 2018.

Between 2017 and 2020, non-coniferous roundwood imports to Western Europe were distributed across many countries. Poland accounted for 8.6% of imports, Slovakia for 4.3%, and Hungary for 3.6%. Together, these three countries represented just 16.5% of total import flows.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 6.3%, with an average annual decline of 2.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 426.8 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 12.5%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 10.2% drop.
