From 2018 to 2023, production of non-coniferous roundwood in Polynesia showed a steady, gradual increase from 84,862 m³ to 84,920 m³. This growth was underpinned by a series of investments and policy measures aimed at developing the local forestry sector. In 2018, the government authorized the use of Caribbean pine in construction, creating new demand for local wood. Subsequent years saw concrete industrial expansion, including funding for the Société d’Exploitation de Bois Marquisienne (SEBM) in 2019 and the installation of a high-capacity sawing line at the Papara sawmill in 2020, which significantly boosted processing capacity and supported consistent roundwood offtake.

The total market volume, reflecting domestic consumption, fluctuated significantly between 2020 and 2023, driven largely by volatile import levels. After reaching 136,900 m³ in 2021, the market contracted to 99,816 m³ in 2022 before recovering to 137,792 m³ in 2023. These swings occurred alongside a sustained policy push to valorize local wood and reduce import dependency. The development of local sawmill infrastructure, such as SEBM's new facility on Nuku Hiva that tripled its capacity from 2023, directly supported the use of domestic roundwood and altered trade dynamics.

The sector's evolution continued into 2024, marked by the operational launch of SEBM's new sawmill and the implementation of government regulations for wood grading and phytosanitary treatment standards. These steps, coupled with a growing consumer and business preference for local timber, are structuring a more self-sufficient industry, as seen in the sharp reduction of imports to just over 1,000 m³ in 2024.
