Earlier Report Observations

The Iranian non-coniferous roundwood market expanded from 432.6 thousand m³ in 2018 to a peak of 481.8 thousand m³ in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by a sharp rise in imports, which more than doubled from 18.6 to 36.1 thousand m³ over the two years, while exports nearly vanished. Underlying this shift was a persistent shortage of domestic forest resources available for harvest, coupled with low levels of wood cultivation, which forced the country's wood and pulp industries to rely increasingly on foreign supply. Tariff and exchange rate policies during this period were key regulatory tools that facilitated the inflow of wood to meet industrial demand and support forest conservation efforts.

After 2020, the market volume began a gradual contraction, falling to 457.5 thousand m³ by 2023. This reversal was triggered by severe floods in northern provinces in 2021, which caused financial damage and disrupted supply chains, leading to a market recession and price declines. The following years continued to see the market influenced by these natural and infrastructural constraints, alongside ongoing adjustments to import policies. Although there was noted interest in sourcing wood from neighboring countries like Russia due to favorable quality and price, import volumes continued to decline through 2023.
