Earlier Report Observations

The market for non-coniferous roundwood in Romania experienced a period of growth from 2018 to 2022, with consumption increasing from 10 067 thousand m³ to 11 384 thousand m³. This represented a rise of over 13% across the five-year span. However, in 2023 the market volume contracted sharply to 10 167 thousand m³, bringing it back near the level seen in 2019.

Domestic production followed a similar trajectory, reaching a high of 11 393 thousand m³ in 2022 before declining to 10 142 thousand m³ in 2023. Import volumes fell significantly from 114 thousand m³ in 2018 to a low of 43 thousand m³ in 2020, then partially recovered. Exports varied over the period, with a notable drop to 23 thousand m³ in 2021.

The net trade balance had a modest impact on overall market size, given the much larger scale of domestic production. The reduction in imports after 2018 decreased reliance on foreign supply, while export fluctuations, particularly the sharp decline in 2021, temporarily increased wood availability for the domestic market.
