From 2018, particle board production in Iran was sustained at high levels, around 880 thousand m³ annually, driven by technological advancements that reduced costs and made it one of the most affordable wood-based panels. The market operated under a multi-party import structure with key partners like Turkey and Russia, while domestic producers increasingly adopted wood waste recycling to lower expenses and preserve resources.

Production peaked at 910 thousand m³ in 2021, supported by further innovations and changes in import policies that encouraged local manufacturing. This year also saw exports surge to 298 thousand m³, significantly reducing domestic market volume to 617 thousand m³. Subsequently, production declined to 744 thousand m³ in 2022 and 710 thousand m³ in 2023, influenced by exchange rate volatility and rising raw material prices that increased production costs.

Throughout the period, the industry shifted focus toward alternative products like OSB and MDF, which gained traction due to their moisture resistance and applications in construction. This diversification, along with continued emphasis on recycled materials, contributed to a partial market recovery, with volume reaching 627 thousand m³ in 2023.

Following a two-year decline, particle board of wood production in Iran rebounded. In 2020, Iran produced 890.0 K m³ of particle board, marking a modest increase of 3.5% compared to the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 860.0 K m³, which saw the largest decline of 2.2% during this period.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkmenistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan were the top destinations for Iran's particle board exports in volume terms. Turkmenistan accounted for 42.0% of exports, Iraq for 18.9%, and Afghanistan for 17.2%, together making up 78.1% of total export flows.
