Earlier Report Observations

The market for wood in the rough in Iran expanded from 303.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 330.9 thousand tons in 2020, driven primarily by a sharp rise in imports. In 2019, a government ban on logging in northern forests and restrictions on raw wood imports created a domestic shortage, prompting manufacturers to increase overseas purchases. Imports more than doubled from 17.3 thousand tons in 2018 to 41.3 thousand tons in 2020, with many processors sourcing raw wood from Russia for finishing in Iranian kilns.

After peaking in 2020, the market contracted steadily to 302.8 thousand tons by 2023. Import volumes fell significantly as currency fluctuations and rising dollar prices made imported wood more expensive. At the same time, higher-quality Iranian thermowood gained market share due to its more competitive pricing, partially replacing imported supply. Domestic production remained stable at around 290 thousand tons throughout the period.

The Tehran wood market in Khorasan industrial town remained the country's main distribution hub, offering a wide range of domestic and imported wood. Specialized wood product markets, such as the Pasaragad furniture market, diversified consumption segments and supported ongoing commercial activity.
