Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, Iran's wood fuel market volume declined from 34 147 m³ to 29 249 m³. This was primarily driven by stricter quality controls on imported wood and price fluctuations for high-consumption wood types, which constrained supply. Additionally, government policies promoting fuel basket diversification, including a shift toward liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to reduce subsidized gasoline consumption, indirectly reduced reliance on traditional solid fuels like wood.

The market stabilized in 2021 with a slight increase to 29 587 m³, as rising costs for conventional fuels and economic uncertainty made wood fuel a more attractive alternative, boosting imports. However, by 2023, the market volume plummeted to 21 009 m³ due to a surge in exports to 12 032 m³, coinciding with higher global oil prices that made wood fuel exports more profitable and diverted supply away from the domestic market.

Throughout the period, economic sanctions and currency exchange rate fluctuations affected industrial activity and import costs, while domestic production remained steady at 30 000 m³ annually. In 2024, changes in Iran's oil revenue prospects and exchange rate management continued to influence the trade dynamics for wood fuel.
