Earlier Report Observations

The non-coniferous roundwood market in Costa Rica began the period facing structural challenges, including identified legal and illegal market chains that concentrated wealth among few actors and created barriers to using local wood in construction and furniture. These factors constrained market efficiency and contributed to the decline in production and market volume from 4 451 thousand cubic meters in 2018.

Market volumes continued to decrease through the early 2020s, with production falling to 4 203 thousand cubic meters by 2022. During this phase, the National Forestry Office (ONF) published reference price reports for timber, enhancing market transparency and providing data for decision-making, although the overall downward trend persisted.

By 2023, the market showed signs of stabilization, with volume edging up slightly to 4 113 thousand cubic meters. Recent developments include the diversification into manufactured panels using dried wood for furniture and the import of pine timber from renewable plantations in Chile and the United States, indicating adaptation and integration into international supply chains.
