Earlier Report Observations

The market for coniferous roundwood in Costa Rica experienced a significant transformation between 2018 and 2019, with volume surging from 54.2 thousand m³ to 85.3 thousand m³. This increase was primarily due to a sharp contraction in exports, which fell by more than half, while domestic production remained constant at 100 thousand m³ each year. Market size then stabilized at a high level, peaking at 93.0 thousand m³ in 2021 before a gradual easing to 89.9 thousand m³ by 2023.

In 2022, the National Forestry Office (ONF) maintained active regulatory monitoring, publishing price reports for timber including coniferous species. Analyses from that period identified existing barriers to wood use in the country, which influenced market conditions and consumer behavior. These factors coincided with a period of market stability, as the volume in 2022 held firm at 92.7 thousand m³.

Market dynamics by 2024 reflected ongoing diversification and international linkages. Established commercial practices included the purchase of cypress wood from specific diameters. Furthermore, the manufacturing of panels from pine, laurel, and cedar for furniture indicated a shift into new product segments. The supply chain was also influenced by imports of dried and planed pine from renewable plantations in Chile, used in construction and furniture-making.
