In 2018, the Mexican newsprint market volume reached 206.7 thousand tonnes, supported by a 7% increase in imports and growing demand from the publishing sector and education. However, from 2019 onward, the ongoing digitalization of media led to a sustained decline in demand for newsprint, which, coupled with reduced imports, shrank the market to 169.7 thousand tonnes. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further disrupted supply chains and accelerated the shift in consumption toward packaging materials, cutting the market volume to 122.8 thousand tonnes.

A partial recovery followed in 2021, with the market rising to 136.0 thousand tonnes. Subsequently, in 2022, the initiation of an anti-dumping investigation on newsprint imports and persistent global supply chain disruptions contributed to a decline to 128.9 thousand tonnes. By 2023, the market stabilized at 125.8 thousand tonnes, reflecting the industry's continued structural adjustment.
