Domestic newsprint production in Eastern Africa remained unchanged at 13.2 thousand tonnes each year from 2018 through 2023. This stability meant that the total market volume was entirely dependent on fluctuations in import levels, as exports were minimal and declining.

The market volume fell sharply from a peak of 113.4 thousand tonnes in 2019 to a low of 73.4 thousand tonnes in 2021, a period during which import volumes dropped from 102 thousand tonnes to 61 thousand tonnes. A recovery followed, with the market growing to 104.8 thousand tonnes in 2023 as imports increased to 92 thousand tonnes.

By 2024, import volumes had decreased again to 81.2 thousand tonnes, with exports falling to just 0.1 thousand tonnes. The overall trend from 2018 onward shows a market highly sensitive to import supply, while domestic output played a constant but minor role.

Eastern Africa's newsprint exports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region exported 0.9 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 48.7% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 64.5%, with an annualized rate of 29.2%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 3.1 thousand tonnes, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 21.5%.

Newsprint exports in Eastern Africa declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 543 thousand US dollars, a decline of 56.0% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 71%, with an annualized rate of 33.8%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 2 201 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 17.5%.

Eastern Africa's newsprint imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 70.3 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 31.0% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 29.8%, with an annualized rate of 11.1%. The maximum volume was recorded in 2018 at 103.1 thousand tonnes, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 2.8%.

Cross-border shipments of newsprint to Eastern Africa declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 40 122 thousand US dollars, showing a steep reduction of 43.6% year-over-year. Over the period 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 32.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.5%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 78 376 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 31.0%.
